Be Prepared

Facial plastic surgeons love when candidates are prepared for a consult; it makes the conversation much more productive. In anticipation of your consult, take some time to research your desired procedure(s). Read about what it entails, the recovery, benefits, risks and average costs. Be ready to explain to the surgeon your area(s) of concern, why you want your requested procedure and what you hope to achieve.  It can be helpful to bring in old photos to show what you looked like when you were younger.

Also prepare for the plastic surgeon to ask you some questions about your medical history and health status. This information is important when it comes to safety and planning your treatment. Know the medical problems that run in your immediate family. Bring a list of medications, supplements and vitamins you take. If you can, fill out any new patient paperwork ahead of time.

Some facial plastic surgery candidates also find it helpful to bring along a loved one to the consult. This offers a second set of ears to remember important information; the loved one can also bring up any questions the candidate forgot to ask.

Know the Right Questions to Ask

Speaking of questions to ask the surgeon … as you research your desired procedure and think about your medical history, chances are you will naturally start to develop a list of questions. Be sure that your list includes the following:

• Are you board-certified? If so, by whom?
• How many times have you performed my requested procedure?
• Am I a good candidate for this procedure?
• Have you helped candidates with similar physical qualities to me achieve the results I am looking for?
• Do you have any before-and-after photographs I can look at?
• What kind of results can I expect?
• Are my expectations reasonable?
• Do you have hospital privileges? If so, where?
• Where will my surgery be performed?
• What type of anesthesia will be used?
• What happens if complications arise during surgery?
• What happens if I am unhappy with my results?

Cost is also an important consideration during the consultation. Ask the surgeon or the office staff for a pricing quote. Inquire about the payment options and whether there are any available financing options.
