Is Laser Skin Resurfacing Right for Me?
Laser skin resurfacing might be an appropriate treatment solution if you are unhappy with noticeable signs of aging, sun damage and other environmental damage. Treatment is more targeted and precise than a chemical peel, but not as invasive as surgical correction. If you want noticeable results but don’t quite need a surgical operation, laser skin resurfacing may be right for you. Note that it can also correct the pigmentation problems a surgical procedure cannot.
The type or laser and treatment Dr. McCracken uses depends on the specific skin type, concerns and severity of the damage.
Prior to treatment, the area(s) of concern are numbed with a topical cream or with local anesthesia. General anesthesia may be used in some cases. Dr. McCracken delivers targeted laser energy to the specific treatment area. The laser uses rapid pulses of high-intensity light to ablate the outer layer of skin, revealing healthier skin. Or, Dr. McCracken can use a fractional laser to create tiny injuries in the deep layers of the skin, leaving segments of tissue untouched in between the treated areas. The body responds to these injuries by producing fresh collagen and elastin for tighter, smoother skin.
Once Dr. McCracken has finished the laser treatment and applied a layer of protective ointment, patients are free to leave. The skin might be red or swollen for about a week and feel slightly sunburned. Any lingering discoloration after that can be concealed with makeup.
